Five things you can do today to start managing change better

On your first day back after a long weekend, you find yourself, perhaps accidentally, as the one who has been put in charge of “managing” a change in your organization.

Maybe you’ve done it before. Maybe not.

In case you need it, here are five things that I use as reminders to help ground me when taking on a new change.

  1. Believe that everyone is doing their best, and act accordingly – it’s unlikely that someone is deliberately out to sabotage your project (and if there is, fuck ’em…)
  2. Heed the good advice you got as a kid… please and thank you, treat others the way you’d like to be treated, if life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and you can do anything you want when you put your mind to it.
  3. Focus on the positives – enthusiasts, optimists, and bright spots. Be mindful of resistance, but don’t allow that to take all your attention or energy.
  4. Start now. Even if you don’t have much planned yet, it’s important to start doing something. Moving is better than standing still. I start by assessing the situation to get an understanding of change impact.
  5. Listen.

Stay confident out there. You’re not alone.

Have a great week!

I see your cape.
