Mindset

If I could have given my less experienced self one piece of advice, in my early days in this field, it would have been this:

“Your mindset will be more important, for making change happen, than your knowledge.”

I know some will be skeptical. But my days in the trenches introduced me to many people who chose process and plan over mindset, only to see execution fall down.

When you’re helping others through change, it’s messy, thorny and complicated. One size doesn’t fit all.

In the end, your mindset guides how you approach your work and interact with others, and that will matter most.

Below are five mindset shifts that have been important in my development as a changemaker, and I thought I’d share them.

It’s not exhaustive and I don’t claim it to be a “top 5”, but these are real and work for me. I hope you find them relatable.

  1. Good enough is usually good enough (my version of “perfect is the enemy of good”)
  2. Change is a team sport.
  3. Truth is in the eye of the beholder. Accept what people tell you is their truth (it’s theirs after all).
  4. You don’t need to know everything.
  5. Ambiguity is your friend.

No one said it would be easy… (maybe this is #6).

Have a great weekend!
