Music gives me a shot of energy.
Like my mom, I’m often caught humming a song while I work, play, exercise, and, especially, while I’m trying to create.
Growing up, I loved TV and movie theme songs and soundtracks. I still do. I’d be lying if I said the “Welcome Back, Kotter” theme didn’t get me singing.
I don’t have a single theme song. But I will have one for a moment, or a day. I may even have a song that’s top of mind for a week, a month or longer… and it’s in my head constantly. Then, all of a sudden, without warning, another one takes its place.
Having music to help you through a piece of work, a tough time, or getting you pumped up for an activity can be a powerful force.
Music also has the ability to bring people together. Think of the last time you were at a concert. A venue jammed with people from all walks of life, sometimes tens of thousands, unified and enjoying the same show, each having their own version of the experience.
Imagine if we could find a way to harness that sense of togetherness in every day life.
Lately, I’m listening to a a playlist I made this year. It’s my walking music (I try to walk almost every day) and it’s called “2023-Soundtrack of my Life.”
Supertramp’s Give a Little Bit is my theme song. It gave me a nice boost while I was working on some marketing content. Check it out on YouTube here.
This band has a special place in my soul, dating back to days at the family home when I was a kid. My dad introduced me to their album Breakfast in America on the old record player. I’ve loved them ever since. This particular song came later, and I’ve listened to it more than any other Supertramp song.
Take note of which songs give you a boost, build yourself a little playlist, and let them do their thing.
Shakespeare said “If music be the food of love, play on.” I’m not sure how well his meaning lines up with this post, but I like the last two words.
Play on!
Have a great week!
