Common goals

I was at a concert last week.

It was a fairly intimate gathering. A smallish theater of about 600 people.

On stage were a pianist and a guitarist, husband and wife, each having had their own success in the Canadian music scene. That’s it. No one else. They put on an amazing show. Great music. Fun interplay between them, and excellent engagement with the audience. A superb date night!

One of things I love about concerts is that everyone has the same goal.

The audience wants to have a great night. We’re rooting for the musicians to have a great night too. And if there’s a little slip-up, who cares? It’s all part of the experience.

Imagine if we all rooted for each other that way in our workplace (and in life for that matter). In times of relative stability and in times of chaos, crisis and change. As Sam Cooke once said, “what a wonderful world this would be.”

If you are responsible for innovation, improvement, or growth, you are a changemaker. Your job title may not say that but you are one.

Are your goals well aligned with your team members, customers, and any other stakeholders that rely on, are impacted by, or otherwise care what you’re doing?

Regardless of your answer, we can all do something today that builds toward that alignment.

When people are working together toward the same goal, great things can happen.

Have a great week!
