There’s a lot of “human” work that has been replaced by computers. At one time, we thought robots doing simple tasks would be “the thing.”
Nope. We wish.
The reality is that computers/tech/AI are in the mix for complex tasks, thought previously to be safe – research and analysis, medicine, and even creative work like writing, drawing, or painting.
Bottom line, all of this new technology will have a place, and in many cases, will be very helpful.
I don’t believe that’ll slow down.
I also don’t believe that everything can be replaced by a computer / AI.
A machine can’t be a substitute for real social connection and interaction between actual people. Can it?
Technology continuously evolves and advances. But human beings are basically the same, with respect to our need to connect with other humans, for real.
A computer is able to help us write a thoughtful note, remind us about a birthday, and prompt us to reach out to someone to say thanks, hi, good luck, congratulations, or for no specific reason at all.
By current standards, those are now pretty basic. Generative AI will be able to do things that I can’t even imagine.
But will a machine actually be able to care for me?
Think about decisions, choices and actions in our lives that require judgment, emotional intelligence, love, affection, and feelings… How far will AI practically be able to go?
I don’t envision a machine becoming my friend, my mentor, my teammate, or my lover.
Maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’m naive. I hope not.
I need real people and genuine, actual human connection. I’m pretty sure I always will.
And I’m pretty sure others are just like me in that respect, and always will be.
Have a great week!
