Weird, I thought it was just me.
This is the opening line of Chapter 7 of Hal Elrod’s The Miracle Morning. If you’re not familiar with it, check it out here.
It goes on to say:
“One of the most common concerns I hear from people is the idea of adding anything new to their already hectic life. Many of us tend to have an all-or-nothing mentality when it comes to how much time we believe we should take to do something.“
This is so relatable to helping leaders to make change happen. To do it right, they’re going to need to start doing things they don’t do already.
Sometimes, it’s more about mindset and intention than actual new tasks. Other times, it’s all of those.
But as you build competency and habit through practice, it will become part of the natural way you approach leading change. When that happens, it’s just part of your state of flow.
What you need to be able to do is trust the process of investing in your own development. Regardless of who you are or what level of seniority you’ve attained, we all need to keep learning.
In life, and in business, nothing new or worth trying is guaranteed. But change is what moves everything forward.
Trust the process… do the work (take on an acceptable amount to start – no need to break yourself). You may be surprised by the impact you see.
In the opening page of Seth Godin’s book The Practice, it goes…
“There’s a practice available to each of us – the practice of embracing the process of creation in service of better. The practice is not the means to the output, the practice is the output, because the practice is all we can control.”
All we can control.
What you think, do, say, or show is within your control.
What others think, do, say, or show is not.
We’re all busy. That’s ok.
Nothing is guaranteed. That’s ok.
We still need to be able to grow and that takes effort. Make some time. Do the work. See the result.
Not what you want? Tweak it. Change it. Try again.
This is how we make progress. It’s how we help things get better. No guarantees, but still worth the effort and some extra work to grow.
Even when we’re busy.
Have a great week!
