I saw this quote this morning and had to share it.
I think it’s so true.
Too often, project teams miss this altogether and go instead to “fixing the resistance” they’re seeing as their initiative rounds its final corner.
Is that relatable to you?
As projects near their end (I.e., launch, implementation, go live, whatever you call it), like clockwork, we see a new focus on “resistance.”
It’s as though it was unexpected, and it’s usually way late.
But we should always expect it. It’s a natural response.
What do people tend to be reacting to?
Is it the thing that’s changing… new product, software, strategy, process?
Or are they reacting to the uncertainty?
Think about anything in your life.
A new job. Job loss. A breakup. A move. A new home. Kids. Money. Conflict.
Is it the stress of the actual change or is it the uncertainty about the future… the unknown?
In my experience, a lot of times, it’s the latter.
People are resilient. People can handle change.
It’s the uncertainty that causes the angst.
So what can you do?
Be a person. We’re all one of those.
Embrace and exhibit these… Empathy. Honesty. Integrity. Openness. Humility.
I’m sure there are more, but start with those five.
Or start with one.
Empathy.
Put yourself in the shoes of those your change will impact.
What might be on their mind? They have personal lives just like you. Think about your own life. Are there stressors that follow you everywhere? They have those too.
There’s enough to worry about in life. A great leader will appreciate that and will do everything they can to remove uncertainty so you can at least focus on the job you have to do.
Find out what’s on their mind. Listen. Act.
Eliminate uncertainty. That’s the mission.
Start there.
It will make a difference.
Have a great day!
