What’s the point?

These days, I see so much that talks about how frameworks are insufficient, ineffective, incomplete, or out of date.

I hear so much about how complex humans are and that we can never know everything, or even enough, about them to customize our efforts to support them.

I read so much about how the data doesn’t tell enough of the story, that readiness assessments are unreliable, that people are cautious about what they share, that feelings are too difficult to infer, let alone to understand.

The change practitioners of the world are busy trying to build better frameworks, to become more data-driven, and overall, to enable modernized approaches, techniques, and tools for managing change.

But what about the rest of folks, who are leading change from the side of their desk, amid too many “top” priorities, overwhelming pressure, a relentless pace, and without a change “expert” at their disposal?

When all the experts are saying “that’s not good enough,” guess what the managers and leaders are asking?

“Then what’s the point?”

If you’ve lost before you’ve started, what is the point?

The point is this, and I believe strongly in it.

Something is better than nothing.

A little change management intervention will help more than it will hurt.

Start somewhere for this time.

Next time, maybe you can do more. And even if not, something is better than nothing.

In a world where we say that perfect is the enemy of good, and then so often turn the other way, and demand perfection anyway… nobody has a chance.

Perfect is almost never the answer to anything.

Start somewhere. Be patient. Take the small wins. Put people first. Do your best.

If you can do that, you’re leading change better than you did yesterday.

That’s good enough for now.

That’s the point.

Have a great weekend!

And Happy Thanksgiving America!
