For most of my career, I’ve been in the business of helping people in organizations to make change happen. I started in HR consulting, then went back to school and wound up in tech. At that time, I was spending most of my time working to define and design change… to processes, policies, strategies, programs, systems, and structures.
Then, opportunity knocked. I usually describe it as accidental. Maybe it was fate.
I was working in a Fortune 500 tech company and a large system implementation was being planned. I took on the role of change management leader (whatever that meant) for a work stream that would impact 5,000+ people.
I had no formal training and little knowledge in “change management.”
But I was enthusiastic and had the right mindset, which is to say I cared about how the change would affect our team members and was up for the challenge of learning and seeing how I could help.
I’ve been learning ever since.
Today, I’m a “certified” change professional (CCMPTM) with a bit of grey hair, plenty of success stories, a few scars, and a sense of humour. I’m confident and comfortable in the thorniest of situations, especially those “people-y” things that many don’t like very much. And I’m pretty relatable so I can engage with senior leaders, middle managers and front line staff alike.
I love this part of what I do.
